Every deck build starts with the same question - what are we working with? This site in Sandwich had some real challenges. Uneven terrain, boulders sitting right in the build zone, and a sloped yard that needed to be accounted for before a single board went down. That's exactly where planning ahead pays off.

We started by setting the footings and getting everything dialed in at the foundation level. The post bases are anchored and positioned to handle the grade changes across the site. Before the framing went up, we checked and double-checked that everything was sitting level - because if the foundation is off, everything above it is off too. No shortcuts at this stage.

With the footings set, we moved into framing. The pressure treated lumber is laid out with consistent joist spacing throughout, tied into a solid beam-and-rim-joist system that gives this deck the structural backbone it needs. The frame sits tight against the house, and the ledger connection is properly flashed and sealed to keep water out long-term.

What you're looking at here is the unglamorous part of a deck build - the work that nobody sees once the decking goes down. But this is exactly what separates a deck that lasts decades from one that starts showing problems in a few years. Good framing, proper footings, quality materials. That's the foundation of the whole project.

We're still in progress on this one, and there's a lot more to come. The framing stage is behind us and the real character of this outdoor space is going to start showing up fast. Deck season is fully underway, and this Sandwich build is shaping up to be a great one.
